Is it possible to be an Ex-Pat or Refugee from your home state? How about a runaway? If so, you can call myself and plenty of others just that. We have moved on from the stagnant, quicksand nature of St. Louis and onto other places that offer some level of solace and some semblance of a “normal” life.

With education acting as if it has a starring role in in the movie Now You See Me parents have no idea if their children will even make it out of Pre-K these days. Mike Brown still has no justice and Darren Seals murder is a joke to law enforcement and local government is more like student government who is trying to get pizza on the menu for Friday’s. Naaah, I’m good, no moving back for me. I won’t even go back for family reunions because folks keep dying on vacation there. A sista is afraid ya and I’m a certified G!

I had the chance to sit and speak with others who have left and yet to return and of course the reasons vary as to why they have yet to once again make St. Louis home, but the point is there is no going back. We miss family and friends but we are not willing to risk our lives or the lives and futures of those we love just to go back. I want to know what the people there are going to do about it besides bitch about it in a blunt cypher, at the beauty shop/barber shop, backyard bbq and in Facebook threads? Don’t come at me with that, “Bitch you don’t live here so you can’t talk!” mess either. I do what needs to be done in the city I DO live in. I take part in local government, I educate my children OUTSIDE of the school system, I SHOW UP at the school on a regular basis, I hold those in my neighborhood accountable so YES, YES I can speak and ask questions and so should you. If you have to run for local office, call your Congressman/woman until they are sick of you but do not take what they give you lying down like a sick and dying dog.

Our ancestors fought long and hard for us to be stronger fighters so FIGHT! I’m sure if circumstances were to change there would be an influx of people moving BACK to St. Louis as opposed to moving FROM St. Louis. Being a closet activist or a Facebook activist is not going to change the city, boots on the ground, live moves with people who are willing to help and who know what they are doing is what is going to make that city the beautiful Gateway to the West it once was and not the Gateway to Hell it now is.

One would think that more than 100 people would like for the place they call home to be more of an Oasis or Paradise than murder capital of the country or a killing field 10 plus years in a row. I would imagine that parents would love to say that their children graduated and know that it was with a real education and not from three pop-up books from the 1968 integration era. Lordt knows there is nothing worth teaching or learning from any of that. Wouldn’t you want to know that the police out on the streets really were there to protect and serve and not spot and shoot? Basic human rights are not even considered such in St. Louis anymore because the humans there don’t give a shit, they give more shit to toilets than they do to the other people walking the streets with them. HIV/AIDS numbers are on the rise and education is almost invisible. I just can’t imagine WANTING to continue to reside in a real life pit of despair or subjecting those I love to it.

We will fight one another to the death for the simple lest of material possessions, but won’t fight the system for basic human rights and fair and humane living conditions or work together to provide such? Y’all can have SO STL and STL PRIDE if that’s what it means. I’ll remain a traitor and keep living and fighting in a place and with people who love living life and not pretending it for the ‘Gram.
